Former student arrested for stealing chicken PDF Print E-mail

On April 15, a former SHS student, 17, went into the Shorewood Pick n’ Save, at 4145 N. Oakland.  According to police records, he stole $3.23 of boneless chicken wings.

The suspect ran to a house on E Wood Place, where he was meeting his girlfriend and friend for lunch. The police followed him down the street.

Inside the house, the suspect’s friend and girlfriend said they heard footsteps followed by loud banging.  The suspect said police officers entered the home with weapons drawn, pointed at him.  Shorewood Police Officers Moss and Otto also entered the house, but only Vander Schaaf and Moss submitted narratives. Police reports only confirm that Shorewood Police Officer Vander Schaaf drew a weapon.

Police took the suspect outside because of the “mess inside of the house,” according Vander Schaaf’s narrative. They told him to lie on the ground, and handcuffed him. Vander Shaaf’s narrative says the suspect told the police officers, “You can have the chicken.  It’s inside the house.” Police found the chicken inside the house.

The suspect’s friend was allowed to leave to return to school for fifth hour, but the suspect’s girlfriend had to stay and was consequently late to school.

The suspect said that Officer Pfeil drove him to the Shorewood Police Department.  The suspect recalled telling Officer Pfiel, “It was my moral decision to do what I did and now I’m suffering the consequences of that.”

At the police station, the suspect was put in a questioning room. He was asked questions about his girlfriend’s family, but the suspect stated that he kept asking for his rights to be read. Police reports don’t mention whether they read his rights.

The suspect’s mother was displeased with the way the police handled the arrest. She said she would like to meet in a neutral setting with the responding police officers, her son, and herself to discuss that day’s events. “He needs an explanation. . .  He needs an apology but I don’t think he’ll get that.”

The suspect’s court date was originally scheduled for May 7th, 2008, but it was postponed.  The suspect said that he would plead no contest.

According to Lieutenant Zimmerman, Chief of Police Dave Banazinski said the officers involved in the incident “will not be available for an interview.” Ripples  will continue efforts to confirm other facts related to the story. Check back for more.

Seven teachers will be retiring this year, the majority of whom currently teach at Atwater Elementary School. Only two teachers from the high school will receive retirement benefits: Dorothy Shasko, a social studies teacher, and William Poznanski, a science teacher who retired earlier this year.

At Atwater, there are five teachers: Jane Lessac, a junior kindergarten teacher, Sue Borkon, who teaches sixth grade, Ruth Hoenick, who is an English Language Learners teacher for grades four through six, Nancy Behrens, who teaches first grade, and Peg Lightner, a third grade teacher.

According to Blane McCann, superintendent, the district will try to maintain the positions, and he anticipates that most, if not all, will be filled.
