This season did not lead the Shorewood gymnastics team to state; however, Sophomore Brianna Artis did make state individually, and the entire team went to support her.

The state tournament was held on February 29 and March 1, and Artis performed well. Senior Johanna Weisman stated, “I think it was her best meet of the season.”

Flying into a new spring 2008 season are the Shorewood varsity and junior varsity softball teams. Despite the loss of key varsity members Katie Adams, Kristen Wick and Amy Geitmann, the team has been “staying optimistic,” according to Roxanne Kruger, senior captain of the varsity team.

Kruger is the only senior who will be on the varsity team. The only other senior playing softball, Riana Mardila, is new to the sport and team, so she will on junior varsity. Besides Kruger, the varsity team has three other captains: juniors Athena Naylor, Catylin Lewis and Helen Juffer.

The morning of Tuesday March 4th was unlike many other mornings in the world of sports. Brett Favre announced his retirement from the National Football League. He decided to leave the youngest team in the NFL, despite the team making it to the conference championship game and looking as though it had high hopes to return for a successful season once again. Favre said that he was “stressed and tired of preparing for every new week,” in an interview with ESPN Analyst Chris Mortenson. Many people were surprised that a man coming off one of his greatest seasons ever would retire when it looked like he would have such a successful year in 2008. Nevertheless, this man’s effect on the game of football was extraordinary and unmatched by any other NFL quarterback. When asked, other quarterbacks like Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers), Tom Brady (New England Patriots), and Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts) have said that Favre was one of their greatest heroes and influences. This man is idolized maybe even more than Michael Jordan (especially in Wisconsin). He has become the face of the Green Bay Packers, and some might say the face of the entire NFL.

If you’ve been living in a cave the past few weeks then you probably… scratch that. Everyone who’s anyone, cave-dweller or not, has heard the sad truth. A number 4, outlined in gold on a green background, will no longer spring out of the tunnel at Lambeau Field. Instead, it will find its way onto the walls of the hallowed facility, joining the numbers of men like Ray Nitschke and Reggie White.

Throwing my own personal feelings aside, as I admittedly jumped on both the Packer and the Favre bandwagons last season, I thought it only appropriate to list out the stages of grief that Wisconsinites are probably feeling, Favre style.

The girl’s basketball team has had three games so far and is constantly improving. All except three of the girls on the team are returning varsity members and have been playing together for at least two or three years. Though they are quite comfortable playing with each other by now, there is a very important new member to the team this year: their head coach, Christine Gutierrez.
